A seamless and convenient e-health record system to democratise healthcare for Nigerians.
About
I was approached by an agency from the Lagos State Ministry of Health in Nigeria to design a comprehensive Electronic Health Record (EHR) portal aimed at improving access to healthcare.
At the time, only about 5% of medical facilities shared data, and 87% of patients lacked immediate access to their medical records. The challenge was clear: create a robust system that could streamline healthcare delivery and simplify the medical journey for 17m+ people—a task as daunting as it is necessary.

I helped the team design an MVP-set of features that enabled facilities easily record, store and access patient’s healthcare information. After laying that foundation, the next 1 year were about creating an holistic platform that was functional, reliable and easy to use for patients and medical facilities.

The Problem
Bridging the Gaps: Streamlining Nigeria's Healthcare Information System
In Nigeria, only about 60% of medical facilities have adopted various digital tools for managing health records. While some of these solutions allow for communication within and across departments, a staggering 95% of them do not extend beyond the confines of these individual hospitals, lacking interconnectivity with others.
This fragmentation means that 87% of patients in Nigeria do not have immediate access to their medical records; poses a critical challenge. As a result, they are unable to use this information to make informed decisions about their health. This disconnect not only limits patients from actively participating in their healthcare decisions; it also hinders the overall efficiency and quality of healthcare services.
Although there has been a willingness to adopt digital healthcare solutions in Nigeria, the lack of seamless information exchange still remains a big problem. Solving this challenge is key to transforming healthcare delivery and empowering patients to actively participate in their health journeys.

This involved a combination of internal and external conversations, multi-method research and ideation across multiple levels.
I helped bring all our ideas and suggestions to life through high-fidelity prototypes.

Our solution
We developed a centralized database that easily facilitates the exchange of patient data and made it easily accessible to every hospital in the country. It provides real-time access to up-to-date patient medical information from anywhere at any time. This helped with interconnectivity and sharing of health records among hospitals.
